International Law of War and Neutrality

Learning Objectives:This paper introduces to the student to the realm of international laws governing the conduct of independent nation states during times of peace. It is designed to give the students of International Studies, a foundational comprehension of the rudiments of International Law. The course aims at:

• enabling students to understand concepts such as State, Sovereignty and Statehood, State Responsibility and Liability
• introducing students to the principal treaties within international law and calls upon them to consider the context at hand in factual situations.
• focusing upon the laws governing the conduct of independent nation states

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course, students should be able to:

• be prepared for careers which require expertise on the function of the international system and its impact and relevance to the national system
• address contemporary real world issues such as: how the rule of law is upheld at the international level and processes such as internationalization of national law
• apply their knowledge to contemporary problems, with their  insight as to the interaction between international, regional, and national jurisdictions, the impact of non-legal systems such as politics and economics, and the consequences of fragmentation of international law into specialized sub-fields.
