MODEL UNITED NATIONS

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches participants speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities

Participants in Model United Nations conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries to represent, or occasionally other organizations or political figures, where they represent members of that body. Delegates are assigned countries before the conference, along with receiving a topic, or topics, that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences, formulate positions and come up with policy proposals that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent. At the end of a conference, the delegates will vote on written policies, called “draft resolutions”, with the goal of passing them with a majority vote. The best-performing delegates in each committee, as well as delegations, are sometimes recognized with awards.

PURPOSE OF MUN

The world has become a global village and no age is too young to prepare for the future. For students, an MUN Conference serves as an ideal stepping stone into the global arena.

Preparing and participating in an MUN helps students develop leadership skills, research, writing, public speaking and problem solving skills.

In the very first edition of IISUMUN held on 5th of March, 2020, four committees with the following agendas were organized:-

1) GA DISEC- International Security concerns, with special emphasis on Nuclear Terrorism and Nuclear Disarmament talks.

2) UN CSW- Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

3) UN HRC-  Protection and prevention of violation of human rights in the situation of war with emphasis on tackling human trafficking, child prostitution and treatment of victims.

4) UN HCR- Developing sustainable framework to assist refugees and finding measures to improve safety within refugee camps.

The event went smooth and overall it was an enriching and informative experience.
