Summary/Description (max 500 words):
Every year on December 16, India celebrates Vijay Diwas, in commemoration of its success in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. Bangladesh came into existence on this day in 1971 when the Pakistani military in Bangladesh (previously East Pakistan) submitted to the combined forces of India and the Bangladeshi Mukti Bahini (Liberation Army). Vijay Diwas is a celebration of the freedom of Bangladesh from the repressive rule of Pakistan. In India, the day is celebrated with a variety of activities and festivities that pay tribute to the valour and sacrifices made by the military forces as well as the historical significance of the 1971 war. Also, the surrender images of Pakistan depicting glorious victory of India and the birth of Bangladesh were projected on screen.
On the occasion of Vijay Diwas as celebrated on 16th December, 2023, the Department of Political Science and International Relations, organized an expert talk by Dr. Archana Gupta, Head of Department of Political Science and International Relations, followed by a movie screening to mark the event on 19th December, 2023. The major aim and motive of the expert talk was to interact with students and enlighten them about the Vijay Diwas and the significance of celebrating this day. Expert talk was followed by a movie screening ‘IB 71’ starring Vidyut Jammwal, Anupam Kher, Nissar khan, directed by Sankalp Reddy and lee Whittaker. A spy action thriller about the two-front war between Indian intelligence agencies and the Pakistani establishment in 1971. In 1971, the Indian Intelligence Bureau receives critical information about Pakistan and China's impending attacks on India within 10 days. With limited time and resources, IB agent Dev Jammwal tells his superior N.S. Avasti that the only plan to counter this threat is by implementing an airspace blockade, which blocked Indian airspace access to Pakistan and tried to show the violation of the Tashkent Agreement, which involves orchestrating the hijacking of an Indian plane by Kashmiri separatists and ensuring its landing in Pakistani territory. Initially dismissed as an implausible scheme by the government, they eventually recognize its potential and agree to execute the well-structured operation. Complications arise when the entire team of passengers, comprising intelligence officers, find themselves lodged in a Lahore hotel, where events unfold in an unforeseen circumstance, thus deviating from the original plan.
On December 16, 1971, a new nation was born. Celebrated as Victory Day in Bangladesh, the national holiday commemorates the defeat of PAF in the Bangladesh Liberation War and celebrates it as Independence Day. For Bangladesh, the Liberation War signified the end of a period characterized by marginalization and structural inequalities. The triumph gave the Bangladeshi people a strong sense of pride and identity and encouraged a resurgence of resilience and unity.
The triumph has had a long-lasting positive effect on India's relations with Bangladesh. Strong ties have been forged between the two countries by their shared history of hardship and sacrifice during the conflict. A strong sense of gratitude and unity has been generated by India's backing of Bangladesh's Independence. India was after all the first country to recognize the Independence of Bangladesh. Over time, the bilateral connections between India and Bangladesh have only been strengthened by cultural exchanges, mutual respect, and diplomatic collaboration based on their common history.
