The Department of Political Science and History, IIS(deemed to be University) in collaboration with NSS celebrated the International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2021.
The session was presided by Prof. Sharad Rathore, NSS Chair Head-Dept. of History and Mr. Prithviraj Singh Chauhan, Asst. Prof -Dept of Political Science. They said that so many laws and lack of awareness about them and inadequacies of the legal system and insufficient support from the legal services authorities need to be focused on to ensure protection of human rights in the country. They lauded the role of the NHRC, India towards the promotion and protection of human rights. However, they said that the Commission should consider approaching Parliament through the government to seek an amendment in the Protection of Human Rights Act so that it should be able to execute its recommendations. Dr. Ruchika Rathi and Dr. Deepshikha Parashar of Political Science Dept also gave their deep insights about the same with its historical context. Stressing on NHRC, India Dr. Rathi said that the Commission represents the work, dedication, and relentless spirit that are vital to the realization of the vision we have for our country - a vision of freedom, justice and equity. She expressed confidence that by incorporating human rights as a way of life, a fundamental change can be brought about in to eradicate the scourge of poverty, ignorance, prejudices, and discrimination based on sex, caste, religion, disability and other forms, within our society. She urged all to take a pledge to work towards achieving a just and equitable society through upholding the principles and ideals enshrined in our Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for the protection and promotion of human dignity and the inviolable rights of all citizens of the country. At a time of multiplying conflicts, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reminds us of the importance of the freedom, justice and peace in the life of human beings. She said that people must stand up for others' rights.
Some bright students like Navya Sharma-BA, Vanika Chaudhary-BA(Hons.) English and Jhanvi Khubani-BA also shared their insights about the same. It was being followed by a Quiz competition designed by Dr. Archana Gupta-HOD Dept of Pol.Sc for Students. The event got culminated by the words of appreciation and loud round of applauds for the winners.
The event proved to be very enriching for all the participants who joined and made them aware about Human Rights. The event was successful in enlightening young minds and received an overwhelming response from the participants.
