Summary/Description (max 500 words):
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to nation on 76th Independence Day of India at the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi, called India the 'mother of democracy', saying that everyone is working towards empowering every citizen at every corner of the nation. The University Grants Commission (UGC) wants universities and colleges across the country to conduct lecturers on ‘India: The Mother of Democracy’ on Constitution Day, November 26 to push the idea that democracy was prevalent in the region since the time of the Vedas. As per the UGC guidelines, the Department of Political Science organized a guest lecture on “India: Mother of Democracy”. Harshita Sharma who is visiting faculty of the department present the detail view points on democratic features of Indian since from ancient ages .Through numbers of slides she present how India is first nation who has the features of democracy in ancient times .She start her talk by define the meaning of democracy .The specific features which a nation must have to call itself a democratic nations that are people’s representation , rule of law ,Constitutionalism ,quality of decision making, accountability,answerability and even chance to correct the mistakes by constitutional amendment all are present in India .In vedic period ,democratic units were Gana and Sangha .In Indus Valley Civilization having numbers of ruins of structures shown the presence of democracy .Mahajanpadas ,Buddha reign ,Lachhavis tribe etc were numbers of examples present in history which denotes to presence of democratic values in India even more earlier than Britain .India is not only mother of democracy but being second largest world population ,presence of diversity in field of religion ,languages ,caste ,creed and color India successfully completed her 75 years of democracy. Harshita through her findings makes it clear that being of plurality in society ,Democracy is only one concept to rule of the second largest populated nation .The features of Indian Constitution is based on traditional rich customs and traditions which empowered the citizens to be aware of their rights and duties. The students of the Political Science department enhance their knowledge through expert talk about democracy.
